Haiti Paralyzed by General Strike.

The two day strike was called together to reject President Moise’s intention of wanting to remain in office after 7th February 2021. A general strike was called on Monday by Haiti’s social organization and workers unions demanding for the resignation of President Jean-Charles Moise.  The protest and strike was sighting insecurity.

A two day national strike has been announced by Labour organizations rejecting kidnappings that have had an impact on the education sector in recent days. It is reported that activities in the capital Port-au-Prince have come to a stand-still

It has been announced by several opposition parties of an agreement that had been reached in setting up a transition government which was to be led by a Supreme Court Judge. It has also been said that the deal as not signed off on by the firmer ruling party Fanmy Lavalas. .

On Sunday, Mirebalais, Verretes, Cabo Haitiano, Saint-Marc, and Petion-Ville were also subject to demonstrations. The protestors demonstrated their support for Jean-Charles Moise, the Chairman of the Pitit Desalin Party.

As per article 134-2 of the Constitution, Jean-Charles Moise’s term in office winds up on the 7th of February. Nevertheless. It is understood from the opposition and civil society groups that Moise intends to remains in power even after the 7th February 2021. The Provisional Electoral Committee (PEC) chosen by Moise declared that a referendum on the Constitution will be held on April 25 even with refutations against carrying out legislative and presidential elections on 19th September 2021. Constitutional reforms included the elimination of the Senate and the position of Prime Minister. The Haitian Bar Association warned that the CEP had no “legitimacy” to call for a referendum and organize the elections.
