Africa ( Commonwealth Union) _ Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has defended the government’s decision to end fuel subsidies, despite the resulting increase in prices for transportation and commodities. Tinubu emphasized the need for patience as the move contributes to additional economic hardships, stating that the money saved from the subsidy will be allocated to fighting poverty and implementing other initiatives. He acknowledged the visible effects of poverty on the population and expressed the government’s commitment to eliminating it. The governors present at the meeting supported the removal of the subsidy and pledged to collaborate in its implementation.

Nigeria, despite being an oil-producing nation, relies on imported refined petroleum products and has subsidized their cost for many years. However, with declining oil revenues due to theft and decreased foreign investment, the government deemed the fuel subsidies economically unsustainable. In the 2022 budget, a significant amount was allocated to these subsidies, surpassing the combined allocations for education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Critics have highlighted the lack of accompanying incentives or measures at a time when many Nigerians are already struggling with high unemployment and poverty. Inflation is at an 18-year high, and unions have threatened strikes in protest of the subsidy withdrawal.

To alleviate the burden on citizens, Nigerian states have implemented various measures, such as reducing the workweek and considering increasing the minimum wage. However, the impact of the subsidy removal is evident, with businesses grappling with increased fuel costs for generators, particularly in areas with limited access to electricity. Taxi drivers, like Mahmud Mudi in Kano state, have been forced to suspend operations due to unfavorable economic conditions. Government employees, such as Rafi’atu Audi, find it challenging to afford daily commuting expenses with the sharp increase in transportation fares. The removal of the fuel subsidy has intensified the economic challenges faced by individuals and families, prompting concerns among the population.
