Whale-watching  

Whale-watching in Hermanus is ranked among the top 12 whale-watching destinations by the World Wildlife Fund. Hermanus is a main location for the breeding of southern right whales. One of the best reasons to go for this is you can watch whales from the comfort of the shore, offering a seasickness-free experience unlike any other. 

The ideal time of the year to experience this magical spectacle is from June to December. There’s even a Whale Festival in September – the only Eco-Marine Festival in the World, which is worth partaking in. Hermanus has the world’s only Whale Caller, a person who uses a kelp horn to announce sightings of whales. 

For incredible whale-watching, don’t miss Gearing’s Point at 71 Marine Drive. This viewing point offers a panoramic ocean view, with a telescope available for enhanced viewing. Benches and patches of grass provide perfect spots to relax while awaiting the sight of these magnificent creatures. 

The Cliff Path 

Take a stroll along the Cliff Path, a scenic 12-kilometer route hugging the ocean from New Harbour to Grotto Beach. Passing through the Old Harbour, a national monument, which glimpse the town’s history dating back to the mid-19th century. 

The path offers prime spots for land-based whale-watching, with whales often seen as close as five meters from shore. You’ll also encounter outdoor artworks and information boards highlighting local flora and fauna. Access caves and tidal pools along the way, and note that some sections are wheelchair-friendly. 

Voelklip Beach 

One of the Western Cape’s finest beaches, known for its pristine, clear waters, fine white sands, and idyllic setting, this secluded gem offers a peaceful escape from the crowds often found at Onrus and Grotto Beach. Popular among surfers, it’s also perfect for picnics on the nearby lawns. The sandy beach is bordered by rocky outcrops, creating a sheltered swimming area. 

Klipgat Cave 

Klipgat Cave in De Kelders is renowned for its natural limestone “window” offering stunning ocean views. The recent discovery of stone tools and human bones dating back around 70,000 years has added to its cultural, historical, and world heritage significance. To reach the cave from the Walker Bay Nature Reserve’s gate at De Kelders, follow the boardwalk and step down to the cave. While it may be a bit of a scramble, the view and atmosphere are well worth the effort. 

Fernkloof Nature Reserve 

Spanning approximately 1,800 hectares in the Kleinrivier Mountains above Hermanus, Fernkloof Nature Reserve is a haven for flourishing and diverse plant and bird life. The reserve boasts an impressive 1,300 fynbos species out of the 9,000 found in the Cape Floral Kingdom. It’s a rare opportunity to witness such a variety of species in such close proximity.
