Indonesia marked a significant milestone in promoting religious harmony with the inauguration of the Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam Temple, also known as the Jakarta Murugan Temple, on February 2, 2025. Located in Kalideres, West Jakarta, this temple is now recognized as the largest Hindu temple in Southeast Asia, symbolizing Indonesia’s commitment to religious freedom and cultural diversity.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent government officials, including Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, and Budiman Sudjatmiko, Chairman of the National Poverty Alleviation Acceleration Agency. President Prabowo Subianto, initially scheduled to attend, was represented by his special envoy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, due to health reasons. Hashim highlighted the government’s dedication to supporting religious diversity and fostering unity among Indonesia’s various religious communities.
Spanning 4,000 square meters, the temple features a striking 40-meter-tall Rajagopuram, symbolizing divine grace, and a 21-meter statue of Lord Murugan, representing spiritual ascension. The architectural design is a harmonious blend of Indian, Balinese, and Javanese influences, reflecting Indonesia’s Pancasila philosophy, which emphasizes unity in diversity.
Minister Nasaruddin Umar emphasized that the temple is not just a place of worship but also a testament to the constitutional right to religious freedom in Indonesia. He proposed that the temple could serve as a Hindu study center, promoting religious education and the noble values of Hinduism within the country.
Hashim Djojohadikusumo, speaking on behalf of President Prabowo, expressed admiration for the temple’s grand architecture and cultural significance. He noted that while Hindu sects in India often operate separately, Indonesia’s Hindu community has demonstrated unity through this temple, serving as a symbol of religious harmony.
The temple is expected to become a major cultural center and tourist destination, strengthening Indonesia’s historical ties with India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a prerecorded message, highlighted the deep-rooted connections between the two nations, further solidified by President Prabowo’s recent visit to India as the chief guest at the 76th Republic Day celebration.
The successful construction of the temple was facilitated by the central and local governments, who provided essential permits and support. This development underscores Indonesia’s role as a diverse nation that upholds the principles of Pancasila, promoting unity and mutual respect among its people.
