The world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88. The news has sent waves of sorrow not just through the Catholic community but across political, religious, and entertainment circles. A string of Hollywood celebrities has joined millions around the globe in remembering the Pontiff’s deep compassion, progressive values, and enduring message of universal love.

The beloved Pope Francis, who had been suffering from double pneumonia and bronchitis, made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday. Seated in a wheelchair on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he greeted crowds with a simple but heartfelt “Happy Easter.” The following morning, the Vatican announced his passing, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the globe.

Among the first from the entertainment industry to pay their respects was Whoopi Goldberg, who shared a touching image of herself with the Pope. In her tribute, she praised his “love of humanity and laughter” and said he reminded her of Pope John XXIII, adding, “He made belief real.” Her words highlighted the spiritual leader’s reputation for being approachable, kind, and deeply connected to people of all backgrounds.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who met the Pope in 2016 during the filming of his climate change documentary Before the Flood, called him a “transformational leader.” He recounted their conversation on the need for environmental reform and praised the Pope’s commitment to global ecological issues. “His legacy will inspire generations of environmentalists,” DiCaprio said.

Famed director Martin Scorsese, whose films have often explored themes of Catholicism, offered a deeply personal tribute. Calling Pope Francis “a remarkable human being,” Scorsese admired his humility, wisdom, and emphasis on forgiveness. “He never stopped learning, and he never stopped enlightening,” he wrote. “He left a light behind, and it can never be extinguished.”

Others shared briefer, yet heartfelt messages. Toni Collette posted a quote from the Pope on her Instagram story: “Be the first to seek to bring good; do not grow accustomed to evil, but defeat it.” She added simply, “He was a good one.” Eva Longoria echoed her message by posting a photo of the Pope waving, complete with a prayer emoji and a note of gratitude.

Russell Crowe, who met Pope Francis in 2014, shared a photo of the Rome skyline, writing: “A beautiful day in Rome, but a sad day for the faithful.” His words captured the bittersweet tone of the day—recognition of a life well lived, paired with the sorrow of a profound loss.

Antonio Banderas, posting a photo of himself shaking hands with the Pope, wrote, “He showed kindness, love, and mercy to the neediest people.” Many people saw Pope Francis as a religious figure who embodied humility and grace, and the Spanish actor’s words echoed these sentiments.

Comedian Jimmy Fallon shared a lighthearted yet touching message, recalling their meeting last summer. “I’m glad I made you laugh,” he wrote. “Thank you for your encouraging words. Rest in peace.”

Fashion icon Donatella Versace kept her tribute simple and dignified: “Rest In Peace His Holiness Pope Francis,” she wrote on her Instagram story.

Also remembering the Pontiff was Adjoa Andoh, star of Bridgerton, who praised his compassion and support for the marginalized, even within the constraints of his tradition. “What a loss,” she wrote.

Patti Smith, musician and poet, shared a brief poem alongside an image of a dandelion: “Farewell dear Pope Francis. Nature and poetry and the suffering shall miss their champion.” Her words spoke to the Pope’s connection with the natural world and those in need.

Gloria Estefan offered her thoughts in both English and Spanish, praising the Pope’s courage and love. “You opened hearts and minds and were fearless in your guidance,” she wrote.

The late Pope, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, became the first Jesuit and the first South American to lead the Catholic Church. Elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Francis quickly became known for his modesty and open-mindedness.

As cardinals prepare for his funeral and nine days of mourning, the global community is left to reflect on his powerful legacy. In his final years, even amid health struggles, Pope Francis remained a figure of strength, grace, and relentless hope.

As many celebrities have echoed, his loss is not just that of a religious leader but of a man who deeply touched lives across all walks of life—with laughter, humility, and an unwavering dedication to the dignity of all people.
