Hopefully the new curriculum will close ‘woeful’ gaps in knowledge of nation’s past.

The one thing that we must all agree on is that no curriculum will ever be perfect. No matter how hard an education institute may try they will never be able to satisfy all the wants and needs of a child educationally. This being aid we must understand that teachers and other educational workers try their level best to provide student with the best learning environment.

When it comes to New Zealand and its rich history the teachers had noticed there was a bit missing in their school curriculums. The missing was the past of the country. The younger generation of New Zealand does not have a clear idea of the history of the country that they are born into and living in.

The School system in New Zealand have come up with a way to fill in this gap through their curriculum. The teachers of Aotearoa New Zealand are all for the curriculum being changed. They stated that this addition to the curriculum will help fill the younger people’s knowledge of the country’s past. They say it will also prompt schools to make closer links with hapū and iwi so they can teach local history, and they are optimistic about its potential for influencing wider society. Consultation on the draft curriculum ended this week, and the Education Ministry said it had received 4880 submissions.

Once this document has been passed through by the ministry of education it will be a part of the core curriculum which odeally means that it is complusory for the children to study it. Leanne Otene the Principle of Manaia View School in Whangarei stated that “I think it’s exciting, really, we can reflect on who we are and how we’ve evolved over time. You know, the bicultural history of our country. Our Tamariki need to know those stories. It’s a really good opportunity to explore those in a safe environment, to understand the wrongs of the past, the treatment of earlier times … explore them and also celebrate the great achievements also that have happened through the colonization of New Zealand.”
