Good things are happening in New Zealand where education is concerned these days. The next bit of good news comes from the Hukarere Girls collage. The school had been needing the government to give them funding to upgrade the hostel for their school so they could get more girls from far away to come and board while getting an education. The petition for this has been going on for a little while and the good news is finally here.

The government of New Zealand has given a grant of $20 million to upgrade the hostels of 4 Maori Boarding schools and Hukarere was one of them. MP for Ikaroa Rawhiti and Government Minister Meka Whaitiri made the announcement during a visit to the College in Eskdale with fellow Minister and Associate Minister of Education (Māori Education) Kelvin Davis. The investment was made so that the facilities would be up to international standard as New Zealand has international students.

Mrs. West who was appointed as Principal of Hukarere Girls’ College in January, States that the funding is eagerly welcome as a step that was needed to rebuild the entire school quotes “I would like to thank the Government for this investment in the lives of our young women by giving their whare an upgrade. Our whole Kura needs an upgrade and we are hoping that the Ministry of Education will follow suite from this announcement to contribute to the rebuild of the entire school.”
