The Jamaican Ministry of Labour and Social Security is in partnership with the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (OFVGA). That is to launch a scholarship programme in support of the children of Jamaican farmworkers participating in the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP). The launch was in Ontario, Canada.

The grant is valued at USD 7,300 (Can$ 10,000) and will assist 10 children or wards of current SAWP workers by helping to offset educational and school-related expenses. Each successful recipient will receive USD 83,950 (CAD 115,000) to cover items such as books, uniforms, exam fees, transportation and lunch.

Jamaican Portfolio Minister Pearnel Charles Jr, speaking at the launch held at the ministry’s North Street office in Kingston on Thursday, 5 February, welcomed the initiative and underscored the wider impact of education.

Minister Charles Jr believed that the thing about education is that it has a multiplier effect. He added that that’s what is expected from this scholarship programme. It’s about having a positive multiplier effect, echoing across the communities. These 10 scholarships have the potential to impact hundreds of people who aspire to achieve more. He added that he believes this investment will be a blessing to many.

Minister Charles Jr. opined that the scholarship reflects the shared vision of the ministry and OFVGA: to demonstrate the link between worker welfare, education, and opportunity.

The initiative also marks the 60-year partnership between Canada and Jamaica under the SWAP. It addresses labour shortages in Canada’s agricultural sector. This initiative also provides employment opportunities for Jamaican workers.

Minister Charles Jr. was also of the opinion that the new scholarship program symbolises the strength and longevity of that relationship.

Minister Charles Jr was of the view that we witnessed this as a symbol of strength and the enduring and lasting relationship that he believes may stand another 6 decades.
