How do you Make studying a daily habit?

Study shows habits have loop: cue, routine, reward. A habit is a behavior which you do regularly.

            Every day when you do things at the same time, it is easier to remember to do them. To determine how much time to study each day, you multiply your grade level by 10 minutes.

         Research suggests the maximum time which you allocate for studying, should not exceed 2 hours. By exceeding that time period, it can cause anxiety, stress and disturb sleep habits.

A daily habit of reading for at least 20 minutes, will help to improve your vocabulary, overall knowledge and language skills.

                 Daily studying at the same time is one cue, but when first forming your habit, you may need something more concrete. A calendar reminder can be set on your laptop or phone, so that you won’t forget.

      The environment which you study matters a lot. It should be peaceful without any distractions like television, music, social media and video games, so that it will help you more to concentrate on your work.

                 Individuals trying to do two things at the same time, tend to make mistakes, as human brain cannot multitask well, especially when you have to concentrate more.

       When studying although you should put away all devices, but there are times you need them to complete your homework. In that case, set a notification “do not disturb” on your phone, close all the apps of social media and silence the incoming notifications, so that it will not disturb you while you’re studying even though you’re using a device.

 Social media, gaming are apps which are programmed to make you check and play more. That means you have to replace these bad habits with good habits of studying, for a designated block of time.

       As a reward after you finish studying, you can give yourself a little time for social media or gaming. Studying itself will become its own reward, with time. Studying daily will improve your knowledge and skills which will give you a sense of achievement which makes you more confident and happier at school.

   Depending on each individual, the time it takes to make studying daily as a habit will take about 21 days to two months.

   The good news is daily studying gets easier, the more you do.
