Hotels (Commonwealth Union) _ Rajeev Menon, President of APEC (Asia Pacific excluding China) for Marriott International, recently shared insights in an interview about his career and the hospitality industry’s growth in the region. Menon, known as ‘The Marriott Raj,’ discussed his early interest in becoming an Air Force pilot, which shifted to the hotel industry due to family connections and a love for travel.

He emphasized his passion for the industry, highlighting key moments in his career, such as managing the Sea Rock Sheraton during a strike and working in Australia during a recession. Menon expressed the importance of creating a strong team, focusing on key priorities, and actively listening to ground-level feedback.

Regarding Marriott’s growth in the Asia Pacific region, Menon noted the significant pipeline of close to 300 hotels and highlighted the success of the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. He expressed optimism about India’s growth potential, citing opportunities in both primary and secondary markets.

Menon discussed the company’s focus on hyper-localization, adapting to each market’s needs. He also shared Marriott’s commitment to environmental sustainability, aiming to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and implementing science-based targets for carbon reduction.

In response to the impact of COVID-19 on the industry’s workforce, Menon acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the need to attract fresh talent by changing perceptions about the industry. Menon concluded by advising ambitious professionals to consider the hospitality industry for its global career opportunities, cultural diversity, and the ability to build meaningful relationships. He emphasized the industry’s unique appeal for individuals passionate about people, fostering relationships, and exploring the world through travel. This insight positions the hospitality sector as an exciting and fulfilling career path for those seeking dynamic and culturally rich experiences in their professional journey.
