India acquires Mongla Port’s Terminal

Ports Shipping and Logistics (Commonwealth Union) – India has achieved a major strategic victory by acquiring operational control of a terminal at Bangladesh’s Mongla port, a development that carries important consequences for regional dynamics.

Media reports indicate that the terminal will be managed by Indian Port Global Limited (IPGL), as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

C Uday Bhaskar, who is a former Indian naval officer and director of the Delhi-based Society for Policy Studies think tank, told the South China Morning Post, “Mongla is a potentially major opportunity for India to establish its credibility as an equitable port partner for Indian Ocean littorals seeking such expertise.”

The Mongla Port, located in the southwestern region of Bangladesh, is a crucial gateway for international trade and commerce. Established in 1950, the port has evolved significantly over the years, playing a vital role in the nation’s economic development. Situated in the at Mongla Upazila, Khulna Division, it is the second-largest seaport in the country, after the renowned Chittagong Port in Bangladesh.

The Mongla Port is strategically positioned at the confluence of the Pashur and Mongla rivers, which flow into the Bay of Bengal. This advantageous location allows for easy access to the vast Indian Ocean, connecting Bangladesh to key global markets. The port is 71 nautical miles upstream from the Bay of Bengal, the port is well protected by the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest. The port is known to provide a natural shelter from severe storms and tropical cyclones that frequently affect the region.

The primary function of the Mongla Port is to facilitate the import and export of goods, primarily serving as an outlet for the country’s agricultural and industrial sectors. The port handles a diverse range of cargo, including raw materials, finished products, and commodities such as coal, fertilizer, and petroleum. The port used to have a handling capacity of approximately 4 million metric tons per year, with plans for expansion to accommodate the growing demand for international trade it is now expected to be much more.

In recent years, the Bangladesh government has undertaken various initiatives to modernize and upgrade the port’s infrastructure. These efforts include the development of new berths, the installation of modern cargo handling equipment, and the expansion of storage facilities. Moreover, the government aims to establish a deep-sea port in the vicinity of Mongla to further enhance the country’s maritime capabilities and attract foreign investment.

The Mongla Port has faced several challenges over the years, including navigational issues due to the sedimentation of the Pashur River, which poses a risk to the safe passage of vessels. To address this concern, the government has undertaken dredging projects to maintain the navigational depth of the river.

The Mongla Port is a vital component of Bangladesh’s economy, connecting the nation to global markets and facilitating the growth of its agricultural and industrial sectors. Despite the challenges it has faced, the port’s strategic location and ongoing infrastructure improvements position it to play an even more significant role in the future of Bangladesh’s maritime trade. The operational control obtained by India is likely to be mutually beneficial for both nations, however geopolitical tensions may arise.

Securing terminal rights in a port can be highly beneficial for businesses engaged in international trade and commerce. This strategic move offers numerous advantages, including increased operational efficiency, enhanced control over cargo handling, and the potential for long-term cost savings.

Having dedicated terminal space within a port allows businesses to streamline their operations, reducing turnaround times for ships and minimizing congestion. This results in faster cargo handling and reduced waiting times for both importers and exporters. Additionally, businesses can tailor their terminal facilities to meet their specific needs, optimizing processes and enhancing overall efficiency. The Indian victory at the Mongla port marks a significant milestone in the India-Bangladesh ties, showcasing the prowess of the Indian relations in securing maritime locations.
