India enters WC semifinals… by 302 runs

-

India (Commonwealth) _ The Indian team defeated Sri Lanka by 302 runs in the World Cup match on Thursday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. With this victory, the Indian team became the first to qualify for the big event’s semi-finals. The Indian bowlers performed an outstanding job, limiting the Island country to only 55 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami led India to a strong start, dropping Sri Lanka to 14/6 in the 358-run chase at Wankhede on Friday.

Bumrah took the wicket on the opening delivery, and Siraj followed suit, doing the same in the next over before adding a second three balls later. In the following over, he took the wicket of Kusal Mendis. Mohammed Shami was the standout with the ball, taking five wickets.

Siraj and Shami took three and five wickets for India, respectively. Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly as well, both claiming a wicket. Earlier, the Indian team put in a frightening total of 357/8 against Sri Lanka in their World Cup encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer.

Following the dismissal of Rohit Sharma, who was caught early in the opening over by Dilshan Madushanka, Kohli and Gill revived the innings, both scoring a half-century. They provided early opportunities to be out, but the Lankans were unable to stop them. They finished with 189 runs for the second wicket. Madushanka broke the partnership by taking the wickets of established hitters. Shreyas Iyer then stepped in and went on to hit a 56-ball 82, ensuring India cleared 300, while Ravindra Jadeja’s smart batting in the finish brought the score over 350

In response, the Sri Lankan batsmen batted poorly, with Kasun Rajitha scoring the most runs with 14 runs. The Sri Lankan hitters appeared bewildered as they failed to decipher the Indian bowlers.Sri Lanka set an unfavorable record as they were bowled out for 55 runs. The collapse of Sri Lanka’s batting meant they were bowled out for their lowest World Cup total, shattering the previous record of 86 runs against West Indies in 1975.

SRI LANKA BACK ON THE TRACK

Mohammed Shami made history by taking the most wickets for India in World Cup history. He eclipsed Zaheer Khan’s World Cup record of 45 wickets. As he spread his magic for the fourth time in the ODI version of the game, he also became India’s top 5-wicket taker.  He overtook veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh, who has three fifers in ODIs.Mohammed Shami, India’s fiery bowler, was named Player of the Match for his brilliant spell of 5/18 (5).

So far in an injury-plagued campaign, Sri Lanka has been on a rollercoaster ride. After losing to South Africa, Pakistan, and Australia in their first three matches, the Lankans responded with two solid wins, including one over defending world champions England. However, a loss to Afghanistan in their most recent encounter ended their World Cup ambitions.

With 4 points and a net run rate of -0.275, Sri Lanka presently sits seventh on the ICC World Cup Points Table. The Kusal Mendis-led team will be hoping to get back on track and stay in the competition.

For many years, the Indian assault against a proud cricket nation has been a hot subject. They struggle with the Indian team in practically every match. Sri Lanka has a long history of being terrified in the face of Indian bawlers. In all matches, they ball out with a low total. All cricket fans in Sri Lanka are waiting for the Sri Lankans to bounce back and start dominating the Indian squad.

Though India easily trounced Sri Lanka by 302 runs, the following match in its World Cup 2023 campaign may not be as simple as Rohit Sharma-led India will face South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. South Africa, like India, has been in excellent form this World Cup season, and it will be a meeting of giants.
