India to back Maldives for UN General Assembly Presidency

MALE, Maldives (CWBN)_ Indian Foreign Secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, has revealed that India will support the election of Maldivian Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid, as the President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Shringla made this announcement yesterday (9th Nov), during his two-day visit to Maldives, which is currently underway.

Moreover, the Indian foreign minister noted that Maldives will be given special priority in the provision of COVAXINE, the Covid-19 vaccine created by India, which is expected to be launched in February 2021.

During his visit, a memorandum of understanding was also signed for an aid package of USD 100 million for the Maldives, in support of the Greater Male’ Connectivity bridge project, which is expected to be the biggest infrastructure project ever to be run in Maldives.

Minister Shringla held a series of meetings with the Maldivian Government and Opposition today, and discussed ways to further strengthen relations between the two nations.

The Indian Foreign Secretary’s visit is the first visit by a top Indian government official to the Maldives this year.
