Gujarat, India (CU)_ Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India aspires to be energy independent within the next 25 years and that electric vehicles, which are creating a silent revolution, would play a major role in reaching this goal. As the transportation sector accounts for the majority of energy use, Prime Minister Modi stated that innovation in this area should be a top focus.

During the event commemorating Suzuki Motor Corporation’s 40 years in India held at the Mahatma Mandir convention center, PM Modi made the following statement, “It is our goal that India becomes Aatmnirbhar for its energy needs in the next 25 years of Amrit Kaal”. At the event, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the new Electric Vehicles (EV) battery facility of Suzuki Motor Gujarat and Maruti Suzuki’s new plant in Sonipat, Haryana. He also emphasized the significance of EV promotion in the country. He added, “As a major part of energy consumption is in the transport sector, innovation and (research) efforts in this sector should be our priority. I am confident we will be able to achieve this.”

The PM stated that one of the best qualities of electric vehicles is that they are noiseless, whether they are two- or four-wheelers, they are noise-free. According to Prime Minister Modi, the EV market in India is expanding at a faster rate. He said, “This silence is not only about its engineering, but it is also the beginning of a silent revolution in the country”. He stated that under the government’s attempts to enhance the EV ecosystem, EV purchasers have been offered tax refunds and a streamlined loan procedure.

PM Modi stated, “To boost the supply, work is also being carried out at a fast pace to introduce PLI schemes in automobile and automobile components manufacturing”. In addition, he stated that several policy decisions have been made to develop a comprehensive EV charging infrastructure. He said, “It is a certainty that with the strengthening of supply, demand and ecosystem, the EV sector is going to progress”.

According to PM Modi, the success of Maruti Suzuki is an example of the robust India-Japan relationship. He added, “In the last eight years, these relations between our two countries have reached new heights. Today, from the bullet train in Gujarat-Maharashtra to the Rudraksh center in Banaras in UP, many development projects are examples of India-Japan friendship”.

PM Modi continued that the late Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, tried his best to enhance the relations between the two countries, while the current Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida, continues this effort. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida delivered his address through a video message. He stated that the four-decade expansion of Maruti Suzuki exemplified the powerful economic connections between India and Japan.

While addressing the audience, Toshihiro Suzuki, president of Suzuki Motor Corporation, announced the establishment of Suzuki R&D Center India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Suzuki Japan. According to Toshihiro Suzuki, India has been the group’s major market during the past four decades. He said, “We aim to strengthen our R&D competitiveness and capabilities in new fields of technologies not only for India but also for the global markets”.

Toshihiro stated that the Suzuki company manufactured over 28 lakh vehicles worldwide in the previous fiscal year. According to him, last year, India’s exports reached a record high of over 2.4 lakh units. He added, “Out of those, more than 16 lakh units, or about 60 per cent, were produced in India”. He stated that India now plays a vital role as a worldwide vehicle production base for the Suzuki Group.
