Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ India vehemently refuted Canadian accusations of interfering in its elections, firmly refuting any such claims and instead accusing Canada of meddling in its internal affairs.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, categorically dismissed the accusations, stating that it is not the policy of the Indian government to interfere in the democratic processes of other nations.
Jaiswal further asserted that Canada has been the one interfering in Indian affairs, a concern India has consistently raised with Canadian authorities. He urged Canada to effectively address these concerns, emphasizing the importance of respecting each nation’s sovereignty and avoiding actions that could strain diplomatic relations.
The dispute arose after Canada’s Foreign Interference Commission requested the Canadian government to gather and provide documents regarding alleged Indian interference in the 2019 and 2021 Canadian elections. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau initiated an investigation into the matter.
The commission’s inquiry, which included the collection of documents and public hearings, aimed to determine whether classified national security information and intelligence should be disclosed to the public. Key figures, such as top officials from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the National Security Advisor’s office, provided testimony.
The establishment of the Foreign Interference Commission occurred shortly before Trudeau’s visit to India for the G20 summit. During the summit, Trudeau reportedly confronted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with allegations of Indian involvement in the 2023 murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
The exchange underscores the escalating tensions between the two countries over accusations of foreign interference, emphasizing the imperative for diplomatic resolution and mutual understanding to address these contentious issues. This highlights the importance of dialogue and cooperation in managing disagreements between nations and maintaining stable international relations.
