Tanden’s major elevation comes eight months after her name was withheld in response to Democratic and Republican senators’ opposition to her contentious remarks. She was born in 1970 in Massachusetts and her parents were native Indians. Tanden’s parents divorced when she was only five years old. However, Tanden and her brother were raised by Tanden’s mother.

Tanden serves as the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank group. She also worked as the Obama-Biden presidential campaign’s director of domestic policy. She began her career in the White House under former President Bill Clinton as an associate director for domestic policy and later served as first lady’s senior policy advisor. Neera Tanden will succeed Jessica Hertz, who recently declared her intention to leave her position.
