Indian Embassy in China lends a compassionate ear

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Amidst the tumultuous backdrop of COVID-19 and prolonged visa bans, the Indian Embassy in China embarked on a significant initiative, hosting its inaugural interactive session aimed at Indian students grappling with academic disruptions. The session, held on May 4, served as a platform for approximately 80 students from over 13 Chinese universities to voice their grievances and share their experiences.

Indian Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, along with Counsellor Nitinjeet Singh, engaged with students, lending a compassionate ear to their challenges and concerns. A detailed presentation by Amit Sharma, Second Secretary (Education), offered insights into the array of services provided by the Embassy, along with essential guidelines and protocols for students.

The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with China’s visa restrictions, had a profound impact on Indian students, particularly those pursuing medical studies. With over 23,000 Indian students enrolled in Chinese universities pre-pandemic, the subsequent years witnessed a significant decline, with current estimates hovering around 10,000 students across China.

Despite the allure of Chinese medical universities due to cost considerations and competitive admissions in India, the pandemic-induced visa bans disrupted academic trajectories, compelling many students to return home during lockdowns. The arduous wait for visa approvals, compounded by uncertainties, tested the resilience of students and strained their academic pursuits.

Echoes of disappointment reverberated among students, expressing dismay at China’s handling of the crisis and the perceived lack of empathy towards their plight. Against this backdrop, the Indian Embassy’s proactive engagement, advocating for the timely return of students, underscored a commitment to safeguarding their academic interests.

Amidst cautionary reminders to adhere to local regulations, the session served as a beacon of support for students, acknowledging their resilience amidst adversity. However, recent reports highlighting the detention of three Indian students on criminal charges underscore the complex realities confronting students navigating foreign landscapes.

As the Indian Embassy intensifies its efforts to address student concerns and foster greater collaboration, the interactive session signifies a pivotal step towards nurturing a supportive ecosystem for Indian students in China. Amidst uncertainties, the spirit of resilience and solidarity among students remains unwavering, underscoring the enduring bond between India and its global diaspora.
