Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to attend the United Nations’ World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, scheduled from November 30th to December 1st, 2023, marking a significant follow-up to India’s influential role in steering global leaders towards a commitment to triple renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade.
During India’s G20 presidency, the nation championed a pledge to reduce coal power, yet the summit fell short of establishing major climate objectives. A recent Reuters report revealed France’s intent, with backing from the United States, to propose a cessation of private financing for coal-based power plants at COP28. India, a nation in the throes of rapid economic development, relies on coal for approximately 73% of its electricity generation. This statistic, although substantial, coexists with India’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The country has augmented its non-fossil capacity to 44% of its total installed power generation capacity, emphasizing a delicate equilibrium between economic growth and environmental responsibility. India aspires to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 and to source half of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030.
