India’s renewable energy capacity crosses major milestone

-

that the country’s capacity of generating renewable energy has crossed 100 gigawatt (GW), escalating it to 4th place in the world in terms of installed Renewable Energy capacity. The achievement was a reaffirmation of India’s push for green energy sources, as its wind and solar energy capacities have also placed the country at the 4th and 5th position in the world respectively.

“Another landmark day in the history of the Indian Power Sector. Our installed Renewable Energy capacity (excluding large Hydro) has crossed 100,000 Megawatts. Under the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi ji (Narendra Modi), we shall continue to be global leaders in Energy Transition,” Raj Kumar Singh, Federal Minister of Power Minister of New and Renewable Energy, said in a tweet.

Earlier this week, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that extreme weather conditions across the globe will severely affect the lives and livelihoods across South Asia, including India. Although the country’s per capita emission is one-third of the global average, New Delhi has launched several initiatives to expand its green portfolio particularly in power generation.

“While 100 GW has been installed, 50 GW is under installation and 27 GW is under tendering. India has also enhanced its ambition to install 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.If large hydro is included the installed RE capacity increases to 146 GW,” the Ministry added.
