“This development will open a new window for efficiently producing clean hydrogen fuel from seawater”. According to Yang, hydrogen could be transformed into electricity that can be used in fuel cell technology, which produces water as a product and creates a long-term sustainable energy cycle.

The researchers created a nickel selenide thin-film material with nanostructures on the surface that was doped with iron and phosphor. This integration provides the high performance and solidity required for industrial-scale electrolysis, which has been difficult to obtain due to system difficulties such as competing reactions that jeopardize efficiency.

Yang claims that the novel material balances the competing reactions with its cost-effective and high-performance features. The researchers were able to attain excellent efficiency and long-term stability for over 200 hours using their approach. According to Yang, “The seawater electrolysis performance achieved by the dual-doped film far surpasses those of the most recently reported, state-of-the-art electrolysis catalysts and meets the demanding requirements needed for practical application in the industries”.

According to the researcher, the team will focus on enhancing the electrical efficiency of the materials they have created. They are also seeking new ways and fund support to speed up and support the work so that it can be commercialized.
