Innovative nanomaterial to extract clean fuel from the sea

-

Florida, USA (CU)_ Hydrogen fuel obtained from the sea has the potential to be a plentiful and sustainable replacement to fossil fuels, but the technological problems, such as how to extract it, have hampered its development. For the first time, scientists at the University of Central Florida have created a nanoscale material that can effectively seperate seawater into oxygen and hydrogen, a clean energy fuel. Electrolysis is the process of breaking water into hydrogen and oxygen, and it has been a difficult task until recently.

The stable and durable nanoscale material to catalyze the process was created by the UCF team, and was published in the journal Advanced Materials. According to the US Department of Energy, hydrogen is a major type of renewable energy, and if it could be manufactured in an economical and simpler way, it could play a significant role in addressing climate change.

According to Yang Yang, co-author of the study and an associate professor in UCF’s NanoScience Technology Center…
