Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Leo Varadkar, the Indian-origin Prime Minister of Ireland, announced his sudden resignation on Wednesday, citing “personal and political reasons,” which has sparked a leadership contest within his party, Fine Gael.

Varadkar, 45, delivered an emotional statement from the government buildings in Dublin, explaining his decision to step down. He expressed his belief that a new leader would be better positioned to secure seats for Fine Gael in the upcoming general election scheduled for next year.

“My reasons for stepping down now are personal and political, but mainly political… After seven years in office, I don’t feel I’m the best person for this job anymore,” said Varadkar.

He emphasized that his decision was also influenced by his desire to support loyal colleagues and friends contesting local European elections, giving them the best chance possible. Varadkar acknowledged the limitations faced by politicians and expressed his readiness to move on to new endeavors.

Varadkar, who was born in Ireland to an Indian father and Irish mother, became the country’s youngest and first openly gay Prime Minister in 2017. He has led Fine Gael since then and has served as Taoiseach twice.

During his tenure, Varadkar championed progressive policies, contributing to a more equal and modern Ireland, particularly in areas such as children’s rights, LGBT rights, and gender equality.

After experiencing defeat in a double referendum on family issues, Varadkar announced his resignation, acknowledging the challenges his government had encountered but expressing optimism for the future. With Varadkar stepping down, the focus now shifts to the selection of his successor within Fine Gael. Several ministers are anticipated to contend for leadership, including Paschal Donohoe, Simon Harris, Simon Coveney, and Heather Humphreys. Varadkar will maintain his leadership role until his replacement is elected. Despite the setback, Varadkar’s resignation marks a transition in leadership and opens a new chapter for the party and the country. The incoming leader will inherit the responsibility of guiding the nation through its challenges and steering it towards a brighter future, embodying the hopes and aspirations of the Irish people for stability, progress, and prosperity.

His resignation does not trigger a general election, which is scheduled for March 2025, but Ireland’s political parties are gearing up for local government and European Parliament elections in June.

Tanaiste Micheal Martin expressed surprise at Varadkar’s resignation and wished him well for his future endeavors, both personally and professionally. Varadkar plans to continue serving as a member of parliament for his Dublin West constituency.
