Is Edgar Berlanga a Heavyweight Contender?

UK (Commonwealth)_ Edgar Berlanga expressed interest on social media recently in fighting Daniel Dubois, the IBF champion, or Anthony Joshua at heavyweight.

At 210 pounds, Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) declared he would step into the ring. Berlanga’s Matchroom contract includes one bout left, against Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. Hearn will approve Berlanga’s demand to face Joshua if he wants to do him a favor.

If AJ and Berlanga were to square up in a smaller arena, it would be a fantastic warm-up fight. According to reports, the 6’1″ Berlanga rehydrated to 193 pounds for his most recent lopsided 12-round unanimous decision loss to WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez on September 14.

Berlanga, a native of Brooklyn, New York, could step up to heavyweight and show that he’s a legitimate fighter by taking on one or two of these opponents if he’s serious about fighting Dubois or Joshua: – Filip Hrgovic – Joseph Parker – Zhilei Zhang – Martin Bakole His Excellency Turki Alalshikh may be willing to accommodate Berlanga in one or two of them if he decides to fund this kind of fight.

It would be on par with a spectacle, like when Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury faced former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, who had no business competing against either of them with  his lack of boxing experience.

It’s unclear if that is Berlanga’s weight after rehydrating, but if it is, moving up to heavyweight to challenge British competitors Joshua and Dubois shouldn’t present any issues. Despite Canelo’s size advantage over the 5’8″ fighter, Berlanga seemed overmatched; therefore, none of those heavyweights would be interested in a circus battle against him.

American professional boxer Edgar Luis Berlanga Jr. was born on May 18, 1997, and he made a run for the unified super middleweight belt in 2024.
Born to Puerto Rican parents, Berlanga grew up in Brooklyn’s sizable neighborhood of New Yorkers.

At age seven, he began boxing. He grew up idolizing Felix Trinidad, the former world champion who fought regularly at Madison Square Garden. In response to a question concerning his ancestry, Berlanga said, “I feel a hundred percent Puerto Rican […] Although I was born there, I belong here. I’m distinctly Puerto Rican. The majority of his family still lives on the islands, he added, and he boxes to represent them and their “beautiful flag.”

On April 29, 2016, Berlanga made his professional debut at Isla San Marcos in Aguascalientes City, Mexico, defeating Jorge Pedroza via first-round knockout (KO). He has since gone on to amass a 22-0 record with 17 knockouts, 16 of which came by first-round stoppage.

By the end of 2020, Berlanga had advanced to a 16–0 record, all of his wins coming in the opening frame. This attracted the attention of the media since he was getting closer to breaking Ali Raymi’s official world record for the most consecutive first-round KOs.

Berlanga equaled Young Otto’s record on December 12, 2020, by eliminating Ulises Sierra in the opening frame. On April 24, 2021, Berlanga’s attempt to set a world record for the most straight first-round KOs came to an end when, in his 17th professional fight, he was defeated by unanimous decision against Demond Nicholson.

On October 9, 2021, under the undercard of Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III, Berlanga defeated former WBO title challenger Marcelo Esteban Coceres by knockout in the ninth round, earning his eighteenth consecutive professional victory. With a unanimous vote and three scorecards reading 96–93, he prevailed.

For the IBF world heavyweight championship, Anthony Joshua will compete against Daniel Dubois, another British heavyweight.Joshua has the opportunity to win back one of his former world titles if he defeats Dubois, who has been promoted from IBF interim champion to IBF champion.

In front of 96,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium, Daniel Dubois spectacularly destroyed fellow Brit Anthony Joshua in five rounds to launch himself into international sporting fame. The 27-year-old repeatedly stopped Joshua to hold onto the IBF heavyweight belt and wreck the career of his domestic opponent.

Londoner Dubois earned the greatest victory of his 24-fight career by stopping Joshua, 34, with an amazing counterright hook. “Are you not entertained?” After the bout, Dubois yelled, drawing thunderous applause from the crowded arena.

“My name is Gladiator. I will fight to the very last. My goal is to excel in this sport and realize my full potential.”he said in high pitch tone.
