Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ During the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with the British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to discuss strengthening of bilateral ties, especially in the areas of trade and investment. Both leaders expressed a commitment to deepening collaboration between Pakistan and the UK.
Prime Minister Sharif briefed his British counterpart on Pakistan’s economic situation, highlighting the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) recent tax reforms aimed at expanding the country’s tax base. He emphasized the government’s focus on boosting economic growth through these fiscal measures.
Climate change was another key issue in their talks. Sharif explained the severe impact that environmental changes have had on Pakistan and called for greater international cooperation to address the global climate crisis. He also underscored Pakistan’s continued sacrifices in combating terrorism, emphasizing the need for collective global action to tackle this threat.
The UK, recognized as the third-largest investor in Pakistan, presents vast investment opportunities. Sharif encouraged further collaboration in trade and investment while also praising the Pakistani diaspora in the UK for their contributions to both nations’ development. The leaders expressed a mutual desire to enhance people-to-people ties and strengthen relations across various sectors.
Later, Prime Minister Sharif met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia’ Al Sudani. They discussed broadening bilateral relations and praised the historic, cultural, and religious bonds between their nations. Sharif also commended Iraq for its excellent arrangements for Pakistani pilgrims.
Both leaders highlighted shared views on international matters, pledging to support efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza and unimpeded humanitarian aid to Palestine through cooperation at platforms like the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
These meetings reflect Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to bolster ties with international partners while addressing global challenges such as climate change, terrorism, and humanitarian crises.
