Sri Lanka (Commonwealth)_The Kotelawala Defense University (KDU) marked a momentous occasion as it celebrated its remarkable achievements and unveiled a series of newly constructed infrastructure facilities. The event, held on Friday (June 23), was graced by Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne, who commended the university’s progress and its commitment to excellence in education and research.

Speaking at the ceremony, Gen. Gunaratne, who also serves as the Chairperson of the KDU Board of Management, praised the Vice Chancellor, faculty members, and administrative staff for their dedicated efforts in raising the university’s standards to new heights. He acknowledged their contributions in earning both local and international recognition, solidifying KDU’s reputation as a prestigious institution.

The Chief Guest, Gen. Gunaratne, received a warm welcome from KDU Chancellor Gen. Shantha Kottegoda (Retd) and Vice Chancellor Maj. Gen. Milinda Peiris (Retd) upon his arrival at the venue. The event showcased the inauguration of various facilities, including the Werahera ‘Somadevi’ Women’s Hostel Complex and several buildings at the Ratmalana KDU campus, such as the Faculty of Law, Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, and the Headquarters Complex.

A significant highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of the ‘Hall of Fame’ by the Defense Secretary. This distinguished section serves as a lasting tribute, honoring KDU alumni who have made significant contributions to military and public service. The establishment of this commemorative space showcases the university’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of its alumni.

The day’s program also featured the launch of the Signature Seminar, a platform for intellectual discourse, and the presentation of a book titled “Sri Lanka’s Post-Independence Defense Policy.” The book comprehensively covers essential aspects of land, maritime, and air defense, providing valuable insights into Sri Lanka’s defense strategy since gaining independence.

During an engaging presentation, the audience was enlightened about the remarkable transformations that KDU has undergone over the years. The university’s growth and progress were vividly showcased, emphasizing its commitment to academic excellence, research advancements, and overall development.

The event was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, Army’s Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. C.D. Weerasuriya, IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, as well as senior state and military officers. The gathering included esteemed members of the KDU academic and administrative staff, who have played pivotal roles in shaping the university’s success.

The ceremony concluded on a high note, exemplifying Kotelawala Defense University’s dedication to continuous improvement and its unwavering pursuit of excellence.
