King-Coconut Exports Surge by 117% in 2023 in Sri Lanka!

With the demand for Sri Lankan king-coconuts on the international market soaring, there’s a compelling proposal on the horizon: the establishment of a Model Village dedicated to king-coconut cultivation. This innovative initiative could mark a significant turning point for the country’s agricultural landscape and export potential.

In 2023, the export of locally grown king-coconuts has already surged by a remarkable 117 percent, indicating a burgeoning market for this tropical gem. Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, recently engaged in discussions with key stakeholders in the coconut sector, including the Coconut Development Board, Sri Lanka Coconut Research Institute, and Coconut Development Authority. Their conversations revolved around the future of coconut cultivation in Sri Lanka and the progress made thus far.

While king-coconut cultivation has not traditionally been treated as a plantation crop, it has witnessed a remarkable surge in international demand. In 2022, Sri Lanka exported 11 million king-coconuts, generating an income of 110 million rupees. This year, the export numbers have already reached 14 million, resulting in an income of 140 million rupees, with a remarkable 117 percent increase in export quantities.

Despite this promising growth in export figures, king-coconut cultivation is yet to become a mainstream agricultural pursuit in the country. Minister Amaraweera has proposed a forward-looking solution: conducting soil tests to identify suitable areas for king-coconut cultivation. These identified regions will be designated as king-coconut export model villages, setting the stage for a comprehensive program aimed at popularizing king-coconut cultivation in the near future.

Furthermore, the country has yet to introduce a king-coconut variety optimized for cultivation, relying on traditionally grown species. Minister Amaraweera has taken a visionary step by instructing the Sri Lanka Coconut Research Institute to initiate research into a new king-coconut species. This new variant will combine superior taste and visual appeal with shorter fruiting cycles, potentially catapulting the country’s king-coconut exports to even greater heights.

The proposed Model Village for king-coconut cultivation offers a promising prospect, not only for the country’s agricultural sector but also for international trade. As the global demand for exotic and healthy beverages continues to rise, Sri Lanka’s king-coconuts stand poised to become a valuable export commodity.
