(Commonwealth) _ Kochi, the port city in Kerala, is poised to become a vibrant center for ship repair and shipbuilding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating projects worth Rs 4,000 crore, announced Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday. Addressing the media ahead of the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to Kerala, the Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways highlighted three key projects. These projects include the New Dry Dock (NOD), the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) operated by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), and the LPG Import Terminal of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. Sonowal emphasized that the inauguration of these projects by the Prime Minister on Wednesday will not only elevate India’s global standing in the maritime sector but also contribute significantly to job creation and support for small businesses. The minister underscored that these projects set a global benchmark and align with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas’ (Together with All, Development for All). According to an official release, the New Dry Dock, constructed at a cost of Rs 1,799 crores on CSL’s existing premises in Kochi, stands as a flagship project showcasing India’s engineering prowess and project management capabilities.
The New Dry Dock project, one of the largest marine infrastructures in the region, stands out for its incorporation of cutting-edge technology and innovations, with a focus on enhancing efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. At a total cost of Rs 1,799 crores, this project is set to play a pivotal role in advancing the maritime capabilities of the Kochi region. Valued at Rs 970 crores, the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) project is strategically situated on 42 acres of leased premises under the Cochin Port Authority at Willingdon Island, Kochi. This endeavor aims to modernize and expand the existing ship repair capabilities of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The overarching objective is to position Kochi as a global ship repair hub, aligning seamlessly with the Prime Minister’s vision of establishing ship repair clusters across India. Indian Oil’s LPG Import Terminal at Puthuvypeen in Kochi, constructed with a substantial investment of Rs 1,236 crores, stands as a testament to state-of-the-art infrastructure. This cutting-edge terminal is poised to make a substantial contribution to India’s energy infrastructure by ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of LPG, a crucial energy source widely used in households.
