Local authorities slashed people’s benefits to clear arrears

LONDON (CU)_ Over the recent years, council tax bills in the United Kingdom have increased sharply, as the government permitted local authorities to expand rates by up to 5 per cent a year. This, together with the economic downturn brought about by the pandemic, pushed millions of people into council tax debt. According data issued by Citizens Advice in January, about 3.5 million people were behind on council tax at the time, although more than half of them were not in arrears prior to the global health crisis.
