make any noteworthy commitments to in this regard, with New Delhi claiming that such emissions targets are an unjust demand from developing nations such as itself, when wealthier economies have failed to make good on their earlier climate pledges.

Despite its reluctance to make any concrete commitments, the South Asian nation has however launched several noteworthy efforts towards a transition to green energy sources across industries, particularly in the transport sector, one of the largest sources of both urban and regional air pollution.

Delivering his address during a virtual event of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari noted that India is committed to establishing a clean energy-based economy, as he revealed a host of initiatives launched by the federal government, including a shift in public transport fleet to green fuels like ethanol, methanol, green hydrogen, eletricity and bio-CNG.

“India is committed to an eminently achievable clean energy-based economy, through an annual road-map for production, supply of ethanol till 2025-26, and systems for its countrywide marketing,” adding that his ministry is currently in talks with automakers on flex-fuel engines and the potential use of LNG and biodiesel in the construction equipment industry.

Over the recent years the government of India has launched a host of efforts to achieve 30 per cent EVs by 2030, particularly in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler sectors. This was highlighted by Gadkari, who noted that the country is gaining good momentum in the EV ecosystem. “There is a good response for battery operated small electric vehicles like e-scooter, electric three-wheelers, e-rickshaws, e-carts, and e-bikes in the country,” the minister said.
