Major rare-earths producer granted some breathing space

KUANTAN, Malaysia (CU)_Since early May this year, Malaysia has been reporting a resurgence in COVID-19 infections and the Southeast Asian country is yet to see the light at the end of tunnel as its daily infection and death counts per capita surpassed India’s peak in late July. The situation prompted lockdown measures across the country, as authorities also imposed restrictions on the number of employees that may visit offices of operational sites. Despite these challenges, Major rare-earths producer Lynas, which operates a refining facility at Kuantan, posted a record revenue of $185.9 million in the second quarter of this year, a 69 per cent increase from the previous quarter. Therefore, as the company continues to expand its operations to meet growing demand for rare earths, its low-level radioactive waste also continues to pile up.
