Saba Singh Grewal. Azad is the niece of Safdar Hashmi, who is a well-known theatrical artist and communist writer in India. She started her acting career in Delhi as a member of her late uncle’s theatrical troupe Jana Natya Manch, where she collaborated with the likes of Habib Tanvir and MK Raina.
Azad relocated from Delhi to Mumbai and appeared in a two-man play directed by Makarand Deshpande and performed at the Prithvi Theater. Her first film role was in filmmaker Ishaan Nair’s short film Guroor. She made her Bollywood debut in 2008 alongside Irrfan Khan, Rahul Bose, and Soha Ali Khan in Anil Senior’s Dil Kabaddi.
Azad is a well-known musician and vocalist in India’s indie music scene. She is one half of the highly renowned electronic band Madboy/Mink, which she co-founded in 2012 with actor and musician Imaad Shah. Azad and Shah dated for seven years until 2010 when they decided to break up. The duo continue to collaborate in musicals.
Azad founded her own theatrical group, The Skins, in 2010 and directed her debut piece, Lovepuke, which premiered in September 2010 at NCPA’s experimental theater. She was a recent cast member of the web series Rocket Boys.
