Motorists can watch TV behind the wheel but it’s still illegal to use a mobile phone!

LONDON (CU)_Just a year ago the United Kingdom became the first country in the world to announce plans to regulate the use of self-driving vehicles. With hopes to be a frontrunner in rolling out autonomous driving technology, Britain’s Department for Transport (DfT) updated its Highway Code to ensure the safe use of self-driving vehicle systems, included Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS), which uses software and sensors to keep vehicles within a lane. This week, the Department proposed several changes to the Code, which will allow motorists to watch TV while behind the wheel.

One of the key changes proposed by the DfT is to hold insurance companies, rather than individuals, liable for claims if vehicles are involved in collisions. However, it does require the motorist to be ready to take control of the vehicle when necessary. This means that drivers are allowed to watch TV on built-in screens when using self-driving cars, although using mobile phones will still be illegal. 

While there are no vehicles that have been approved for self-driving on UK roads yet, first models are expected to be given the green light later this year. The changes proposed by the DfT are an interim measure by the government to support the early deployment of self-driving vehicles in the country. The updating of the Highway Code was described by Transport minister Trudy Harrison as “a major milestone in our safe introduction of self-driving vehicles”. She said it would “revolutionise the way we travel”, making out journeys “greener, safer and more reliable”.

“This exciting technology is developing at pace right here in Great Britain and we’re ensuring we have strong foundations in place for drivers when it takes to our roads,” Minister Harrison said. “In doing so, we can help improve travel for all while boosting economic growth across the nation and securing Britain’s place as a global science superpower.”
