Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Mike Burgess, the Director General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), expressed support for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim regarding the Indian government’s role in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Burgess stated that it is a serious allegation and that he has “no reason to dispute what the Canadian government said in this matter.” The accusations led to a diplomatic row between India and Canada, with both countries expelling a diplomat each.

Burgess shared these remarks during a public gathering of the Five Eyes intelligence partners in California, which encompasses Australia, the US, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand. Although he did not explicitly confirm whether the issue was discussed at the gathering, a national security source suggested that Burgess was briefed on the matter before the G20 summit in New Delhi. This indicates the international scope of intelligence collaboration and the sharing of information among key allied nations.

The intelligence chief underscored the gravity of any allegation implicating a country in carrying out an execution on foreign soil. While refraining from speculating on whether Australia could be a target for Indian agents, he asserted that Australia would adeptly handle any government found interfering in the country. This highlights the commitment to addressing potential threats diplomatically and firmly, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity and security of the nation.

The Khalistan issue has gained attention in Australia, with several Hindu temples being attacked, and the Indian community expressing concern and dismay. The Sikh community in Australia, which forms the country’s fifth-largest religious group, has seen a small but influential number supporting the idea of Khalistan. The issue has led to tensions and incidents, including attacks on temples and physical assaults.
