EPA for failing to approve an alternative fumigant called EDN, which is less toxic and does not damage the ozone layer.

According to Don Hammond from the timber exporters industry group STIMBR, although the industry thought they would be able to come up with a solution within the past 10 years, it has been impossible. He further noted that the recapture process also creates a significant amount of toxic waste which cannot be recycled. “The only solution that’s been given to us is bury it in the landfill,” he said. “Well I’m sure you can see that it’s not really a solution, it’s just hiding it for the next generation to deal with.”

Therefore, STIMBR had decided to invest in EDN, which is said to be used in Australia as well. Although the group applied to the EPA for approval nearly four years ago, they are still waiting for a decision from the agency. The EPA, in its statement, noted that the new information on the alternative fumigant is being assessed and a report will be issued to the decision-making committee within months.
