India (Commonwealth Union)_ In an effort to boost the agricultural economy, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated SAFAL, a common credit site that gives farmers access to 300 term loan options. SAFAL is a streamlined application for agricultural loans that provide farmers and other agricultural entrepreneurs access to more than 300 different term loan packages from over 40 different partner banks.

A media statement from the CMO said: “SAFAL is a simplified application for agricultural loans and it is the country’s first online agricultural credit facilitation portal.” During his address at the event, CM Patnaik stated that the application has the potential to revolutionize loan availability for farmers and agribusiness owners. Patnaik expressed confidence over the launch and described the application as a one-stop-shop for farmers and agri-entrepreneurs seeking financial loans from public and private sector banks, regional rural banks, state cooperative banks, and small finance institutions.

In addition, it has been linked with Krushak Odisha and provides access to over 70 sample project reports, as stated by the chief minister. According to the media release, it will considerably help both farmers and banks by simplifying the application procedure for loans. He also promised that the platform would help eliminate information asymmetry and notify farmers of the status of their application in real-time at each stage of their loan application.

CM also noted that ‘SAFAL’ will not only offer the government with total visibility of demand and disbursement of formal credit throughout the states, but will also guarantee that programs are implemented using data-backed methods. He believed that ‘SAFAL’ would serve as a channel for finance to stimulate the agricultural and related industries in the state, thereby enhancing the long-term economic prowess of farmers.
