On the 40th anniversary, applications opened for UK Chevening scholarships

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Chevening awards. Over 2,000 Pakistani since 1983 have been awarded Chevening scholarships and fellowships.

Chevening is UK’s global scholarship programme, which allows outstanding emerging leaders to follow one-year master’s degree in any subject and at any UK university. Pakistan has many notable Chevening alumni, including Justice Athar Minnalah of the Supreme Court, actor and caretaker Federal Minister Jamal Shah, sports journalist Roha Nadeem and Sonia Shamroz the first ever women to be appointed as the police chief of a district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The scholarships are fully funded, including visas, flights, accommodations, fees and some money for spending. For Chevening scholarships applications are open in the UK from 12th of September to the 7th of November. Applications can be made on the Chevening website www.chevening.org.

Jane Marriott CMG OBE, British High Commissioner said, home to some of the world’s best universities, the UK is a top destination for thousands of students each year.

Chevening scholarship’s does not allow some Pakistan’s brightest scholars to benefit from the UK education, but to genuinely experience the UK and build up important networks.

Chevening scholarships has already had a profound influence on thousands of Pakistani professionals. He says that, this should be encouraged to everyone to take the next step in their career to apply.

This year, there were two new partnerships. Swindon Town, Football Club are offering sports professionals the chance to study for a master’s programme in Coaching and Sports Sciences. Essex University is offering two places on climate change and the environment, heritage and museum studies.

In addition to the one-year master’s programme, there is the South Asia Journalism Programme which is hosted by the University of Westminster. It is aimed at mid-career journalists from South Asian countries including Sri Lanka, Maldives, Pakistan, Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh. From Pakistan seven Journalists will be selected for the Good Governance in a changing world:  the Media, Politics, Society’s fellowship. In eight intensive weeks of lecture visits, these fellows will participate and discuss which will introduce them to key figures of UK academics, media and political figures in the world. They will spend time meeting their peers in some of the UK’s top media organizations.

Recently the high commissioner had a departure reception for 46 scholars from Pakistan who were leaving to study in the UK this academic year.
