Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – Political violence, or politically motivated violence, is a phenomenon that has occurred throughout history and continues to shape the world today. In a democracy the right to protest or the right to vote out a political candidate that we deem as unsuitable or divisive is a fundamental right.

The attack on Nigel Farage while campaigning on the second floor of a double decker bus had 28-year-old man who appeared to throw objects at the Farage and then runaway. The man was reported to be arrested and the Reform Leader indicated that in spite these attacks he will continue the campaign.

“What happened to me in Clacton last week when a young woman threw a milkshake in my face and then the mob violence that we saw in Barnsley today is an attempt to stop me speaking,” said Farage while speaking at an event.

Irrespective of political leanings such attacks have always been seen as undemocratic and the need to defend freedom of expression of those we disagree with has always been seen as a fundamental of democracy.

The throwing of a milk shake at Tommy Robinson while contesting as an independent candidate at the European elections was celebrated by his political opponents and the individual who threw the milk shake was presented as a hero which can send the message to possible offenders of political violence that election violence is permitted depending on the individual.

The stern action that was taken against the assault an individual that attacked former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn at an event with an egg drew, condemnation from all sides of the political spectrum did well to send a clear message that no form of violence no matter controversial the politics has been deemed is acceptable.

The arrest of the individual who carried out the attack, saw the reform party leader give praise to the South Yorkshire police.
