Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various developmental projects in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, amounting to more than $477.42 million. The Prime Minister addressed the people in the holy city and said, “Today is a proud chapter in the history of Tamil Nadu’s development saga.” These projects aim to transform the connectivity and growth rate and create huge employment opportunities for the youth while enhancing the quality of life for millions in the state.
The state’s road infrastructure receives a major share of the funding. The Prime Minister said, “Since 2014, more than 4,000 kilometres of highways have been built in Tamil Nadu.” The new projects undertaken include the four-lane construction of the Marakkanam-Puducherry road, a $227.86$ million project aimed at promoting coastal tourism, and the $195.31$ million expansion of the Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram highway. These road expansions will help pilgrims travel more comfortably to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi and they will also help in the easy transportation of agricultural and marine products.
Another change has been seen in the railway sector, where the annual budget allocation for Tamil Nadu has increased almost nine times, reaching $824.63 million for the 2026-27 financial year. While emphasising the “Make in India” initiative, Shri Modi stated, “Today, 18 Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains are running in the state, and these trains have been manufactured in Chennai itself. Besides, 77 stations are being modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Just now, we have inaugurated the Chennai Beach-Chennai Egmore fourth line, which will give relief to daily commuters.”
While looking into the future, Shri Modi talked about the 2026 Union Budget, which has emphasised modern and advanced infrastructure, including bullet train corridors connecting Chennai with Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Shri Modi further emphasised the importance of Tamil Nadu in the development of Rare Earth Corridors, which are routes designed for the extraction and transportation of rare earth elements, and the development of historic sites like Adichanallur into global heritage sites. “Ecotourism projects and industrial clusters are also expected to create jobs. Thus, a developed Tamil Nadu is essential for the collective goal of reaching ‘Viksit Bharat’ or a developed India by 2047.”
