KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CU)_ Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, on completing his first year as PM, told Malaysians today that once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, which he believes will happen soon, he will advise Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah to dissolve Parliament and conduct the 15th general election (GE15). He stated, “Once the pandemic is over, which I hope will be very soon, I will advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve the Parliament. You are free to choose and that is what democracy is all about.”

Muhyiddin in his address commemorating his first anniversary as Prime Minister pledged that he and his Cabinet colleagues will continue to accomplish their duties and obligations to the best of their abilities until that time arrives. He said, “Until such time, my colleagues in the Cabinet and I will continue to carry out our duties and responsibilities to the best of our ability.”

Muhyiddin said, “When the election is held, of course, we will leave it to the people to decide whether the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government should be re-elected. The main focus of this government at this moment is to steer this country clear of the double whammy of health and economic crises.” He added, “For now, give space to the government to concentrate fully on efforts to control the spread of this pandemic. I am aware of and I understand the meaning of democracy.”

The prime minister has narrowly survived a series of leadership tests during his one-year term, the most recent of which was the passing of the 2021 national budget in November 2020. His first order of business was to avoid the spread of COVID-19 infections, which was first discovered in January 2020.
