Promises of civic education looms ahead of elections

NIGERIA (Commonwealth Union) – There have been things that almost all politicians will promise to come into power and one of the things have always been development in the education sector. The promise of any kind of education has always been the icing on the cake when it comes to winning elections.

As the Nigerian election of 2023 is coming up, one can see the promises of education being made, starting with The Labour Party (LP) candidate for governorship in the Ebonyi state Edward Nkwegu. Nkwegu has come forward and stated that if he is elected in the upcoming election, he will personally make sure to it that there is a civic education programme and that it will be well suited and affordable to the present-day citizens.

Now civic education has been a hot topic amongst many politicians in the recent past. Civic education is important considering the people should be aware of their rights. Basic human rights aside, they should be aware of how their elected leaders and governments should be making their lives better and the country they live in be up to a certain standard of living.

Most citizens aren’t aware of their civic rights. So, when this was promised, Edward knew he had struck a few positive votes. He went on to make it clear what a civic education was. He claims that his voter base deserves to be educated so that they are aware of what they are to expect from who they elect, although there is no guarantee that this will happen if he is elected.

Regardless, the elections are in 2023, which means there may be many other political candidates that would make the same promise. One of the major questions is if elected, will these promises be kept? On the other hand, if implemented, will it be successful? All these questions will be answered once the election has happened.
