Rajesh Agrawal, a London Deputy Mayor born in Indore, is targeting a Parliament seat from Leicester East

-

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Rajesh Agrawal’s selection as the Labour Party’s parliamentary candidate for Leicester East in the upcoming general election is noteworthy. The entrepreneur and London’s Deputy Mayor for Business, originally from Indore, expressed his commitment to being a representative for all residents, particularly considering Leicester East’s significant South Asian origin population.

Agrawal, with the support of London Mayor Sadiq Khan and others, highlighted his track record as London’s Deputy Mayor for Business, where he attracted international investment, created jobs, and improved employment conditions. He pledged to bring similar successes to Leicester East and ensure the constituency receives its fair share.

Reflecting on his migrant journey from India to the UK 22 years ago, Agrawal emphasized his passion for entrepreneurship and opportunity. As a fintech entrepreneur, he established a successful business that focused on lowering the cost of moving money for migrant workers and businesses. He believes in a Labour-centric approach to growing the economy that is supportive of both workers and employers.

Agrawal’s top priorities for Leicester East include championing the local economy, addressing the cost-of-living crisis for residents, and promoting affordable housing. However, he enters a constituency with a history of political upheavals, including controversies involving previous representatives Keith Vaz and Claudia Webbe.

Vaz, of Goan origin, stepped back from Parliament amid a drugs scandal, while Webbe resigned as an MP after facing harassment charges. Reports suggest that both may consider running as independent candidates in Leicester East. Additionally, the city of Leicester has experienced communal clashes, particularly after an India-Pakistan cricket match in September the previous year, prompting an independent government review. Agrawal’s candidacy brings a mix of entrepreneurial experience and political commitment, and it will be interesting to see how he navigates the challenges of the constituency in the upcoming general election.
