The Punjab Kings (PBKS), formerly known as the Kings XI Punjab, are an Indian Premier League (IPL) professional cricket team headquartered in Mullanpur, Mohali, Punjab. The brand is owned equally by Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Karan Paul, and Mohit Burman. In 16 seasons, the squad has only made one previous trip to the playoffs that being the 2014 campaign, when they won the league table and placed second.

The team participated in the now-canceled Champions League Twenty20 only once, placing them in the semifinals in 2014. In February 2021, the team’s name was altered to Punjab Kings. The franchise placed the then-highest offer for an IPL player in the December 2022 mini-auction, paying ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million) for Sam Curran.

The Indian Premier League was established in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is based on the Twenty20 cricket format. Eight city franchises were up for grabs at a Mumbai’s auction on February 20, 2008. The players that acquired the Punjabi squad were Saptarshi Dey of the Dey & Dey Group (minor share), Ness Wadia of the Wadia group (23%) and Preity Zinta of the Dabur group (46%). The franchise cost the group a total of $76 million to purchase.

The areas of Kashmir, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana were the franchise’s catchment territories when it was known as the Kings XI Punjab, as shown by the letter sequence “K J H P H” on the team’s logo banner.
