India (Commonwealth) _ Over the course of its 17 seasons, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a number of high-scoring chases. Punjab Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders, setting a new world record for the most successful chase in Twenty20 history.
It was achieved because to Jonny Bairstow’s explosive century in just 18.4 overs. Shashank Singh, who scored a blistering half-century to support him late in the chase and help PBKS thrash the opposition and surpass the best T20 total at Eden Gardens, backed him.
Previously, the 2020 IPL season saw the Rajasthan Royals surpass a 224-run goal, setting the record for the most successful run-chase in IPL history in Sharjah versus the Kings XI Punjab (now known as the Punjab Kings). In the 2024 season, they tied the record with a thrilling chase at Eden Gardens against the Kolkata Knight Riders. RR scored 224 off the last delivery, driven by Jos Buttler’s perfect hundred.
On Friday, though, Punjab Kings have the opportunity to surpass both the greatest IPL chase and the most successful chase in history of T20 cricket. Once more at Eden Gardens, KCR crushed PBKS with a massive 261/6, setting a new venue record. In response, Jonny Bairstow’s century in 45 balls gave Punjab a flying start.
South Africa now holds the record for the most successful pursuit in the Twenty20 format, having destroyed a Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2021 season, hitting the mark off the last delivery of the game in Delhi after a 219-run chase.
Teams have scored more than 250 times this season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the Sunrisers Hyderabad achieving the two best runs ever in T20 and IPL franchise cricket.

The Punjab Kings (PBKS), formerly known as the Kings XI Punjab, are an Indian Premier League (IPL) professional cricket team headquartered in Mullanpur, Mohali, Punjab. The brand is owned equally by Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Karan Paul, and Mohit Burman. The team’s home ground is the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, while they have also used Dharamsala and Indore for occasional home games since the 2010 campaign. In 16 seasons, the squad has only made one previous trip to the playoffs that being the 2014 campaign, when they won the league table and placed second.
The team participated in the now-canceled Champions League Twenty20 only once, placing them in the semifinals in 2014. In February 2021, the team’s name was altered to Punjab Kings. The franchise placed the then-highest offer for an IPL player in the December 2022 mini-auction, paying ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million) for Sam Curran.
The Indian Premier League was established in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is based on the Twenty20 cricket format. Eight city franchises were up for grabs at a Mumbai’s auction on February 20, 2008. The players that acquired the Punjabi squad were Saptarshi Dey of the Dey & Dey Group (minor share), Ness Wadia of the Wadia group (23%) and Preity Zinta of the Dabur group (46%). The franchise cost the group a total of $76 million to purchase.
The areas of Kashmir, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana were the franchise’s catchment territories when it was known as the Kings XI Punjab, as shown by the letter sequence “K J H P H” on the team’s logo banner.
