Relocate to Swedish Lapland for €900

-

In the heart of Swedish Lapland, a charming yet dwindling village is extending an intriguing invitation: relocate to Glommersträsk and receive financial incentives. With a rich landscape that appeals to nature lovers and sports enthusiasts, this small town is using a unique approach to combat its population decline and save its local primary school.

A Vanishing Community

Once a thriving settlement with a population of around 1,000 in the 1950s, Glommersträsk now counts only 200 residents. The drop has been particularly steep among school-age children, with only 23 young locals currently attending the village’s primary school. The school faces potential closure if its enrollment numbers fall below 25, which would necessitate sending students to a school 40 kilometers away in Arvidsjaur.

The village’s high school, which closed its doors in 2009, had suffered a similar fate, with dwindling student numbers rendering it unsustainable.

Financial Incentives to the Rescue

To address this critical situation, the local organization Glommersbygdens Framtid (The Future of Glommersbygden) is implementing a repopulation scheme reminiscent of successful programs in countries like Italy and Spain. The initiative offers an enticing financial incentive of 10,000 kronor (approximately €875) to the first five families who move to Glommersträsk, provided they have children of primary school age (6 to 15 years old) who will attend the local Parkskolan for at least one academic year.

The organization not only provides cash handouts but also helps with finding housing and listing local employment opportunities. While non-EU citizens are eligible to apply, they must first secure a Swedish residence permit.

Why Glommersträsk?

Glommersträsk is more than just a picturesque village; it’s a gateway to stunning natural landscapes that attract outdoor enthusiasts. The village is nestled in unspoiled nature, perfect for those who relish hiking, fishing, and winter sports. For families seeking a blend of tranquility and accessibility, Glommersträsk provides convenient proximity to larger towns and cities.

Skellefteå, known for its burgeoning tech hub, is just an hour’s drive away. Arvidsjaur, home to a high school and other amenities, is half an hour from Glommersträsk, while Luleå, a coastal city with a museum and beaches, is a two-hour drive. Each of these locations features small airports with connections to various European destinations, including Germany and France.

A New Beginning

A spokesperson for Glommersbygdens Framtid highlighted the program as a “chance of a lifetime” and described Glommersträsk as “a safe space where your children can grow up in a nice community.” According to recent updates, one family has already applied to the scheme, and another has moved to the village with children who will attend Parkskolan.

The local group is hopeful that more families will seize this opportunity to rejuvenate Glommersträsk and contribute to its vibrant future. With its blend of financial incentives, natural beauty, and community spirit, Glommersträsk is presenting a compelling offer for those seeking a fresh start in one of Sweden’s most enchanting locales.
