Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced ongoing efforts to expand its transmission capacity from the national grid to Nigerians, steadily enhancing power installations to efficiently transmit bulk electricity.
According to TCN, its current evacuation capability stands at 8,500 MW, with a target to reach 10,000 MW within the next two years.
TCN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed this on Thursday during the Meet the Press weekly briefing organized by the presidential media team. He credited TCN’s progress to sustained support from the Federal Government, the Ministry of Power, and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Key achievements highlighted by Abdulaziz include the installation and commissioning of 66 power transformers, the completion of new transmission substations, and the re-conducting of transmission line projects. He also noted the completion of 6,000 MVA worth of projects under the World Bank-sponsored initiatives and a 76.47% reduction in grid disturbances over the past five years.
Regarding ongoing and future projects, Abdulaziz stated that TCN is currently working on the World Bank-funded SCADA project, which is 69% complete and is expected to enhance real-time monitoring, improve grid management, and boost efficiency. Additionally, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is enforcing the Free Governor Control system to enhance grid stability and minimize transmission losses.
TCN has also introduced an enhanced maintenance regime, including regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and swift repairs. However, Abdulaziz acknowledged challenges such as insurgency and vandalism, particularly in the North and South-South regions, which disrupt power supply. To mitigate these issues, TCN is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), security agencies, and local vigilantes to safeguard power installations nationwide.
Highlighting recent milestones, Abdulaziz stated, “The power sector recorded a new and unprecedented peak generation of 5,801.84 megawatts of electricity on March 4, 2025, at 21:15 hours. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) efficiently evacuated this bulk power to distribution load centers nationwide.”
“With numerous TCN transmission projects completed in the last two years and new ones currently underway, as well as our 8,500 MW current evacuation capability, I can confidently state that in less than two years, TCN will be able to evacuate 10,000 megawatts of generated power,” he added.
