Australia has recently implemented stricter visa requirements for international students, aiming to ensure they can sustain themselves financially while pursuing their studies in the country. Effective May 10, 2024, the minimum savings required for a student visa will be set at 75% of the national minimum wage, amounting to A$29,710 (₹16,29,964). This adjustment comes as the second increase in seven months, following a previous raise to A$24,505 (₹13,44,405) in October, reflecting the government’s proactive stance in addressing concerns arising from the influx of individuals to Australia post-COVID-19 restrictions.
The decision to heighten the financial threshold for student visas is grounded in the necessity to mitigate issues such as the strain on housing availability, driven by the surge in migrants to Australia. Reports indicate a record-high issuance of temporary student visas, totaling 6,54,870 in July 2023, highlighting the need for measures to regulate student migration effectively.
In addition to financial requirements, the Australian government has implemented various policies to uphold the integrity of the student visa system and support genuine students. The replacement of the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement ensures that individuals applying for student visas are genuinely committed to their studies, rather than seeking primarily to work in the country.
Furthermore, the extension of Post-Study Work Rights (PSWR) by up to two years from July 1, 2023, provides international students with opportunities to gain relevant work experience in their respective fields after completing their studies. However, measures have also been taken to prevent abuse of the system, such as limiting work hours during study terms and semesters to 48 hours per fortnight, effective from July 1, 2023.
To maintain academic integrity, a minimum total score of 5.5 is now required for international students enrolling in universities and programs, ensuring that students possess the necessary language proficiency to succeed in their studies. Additionally, restrictions have been imposed on simultaneous enrollment in multiple courses within the first six months of a student’s principal course, effective from September 8, 2023, to deter exploitation of enrollment loopholes.
Furthermore, changes have been made to visa options available to international graduates, such as the imposition of limits on the Skilled-Recognised Graduate visa from December 22, 2023, which previously allowed recent engineering graduates to stay, work, or study in Australia for up to 18 months.
These measures collectively reflect the Australian government’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its student visa system while supporting genuine students in their educational endeavors. By addressing concerns related to financial sustainability, language proficiency, and post-graduation opportunities, Australia aims to foster a conducive environment for international students to thrive academically and contribute positively to the country’s workforce and society.
