In a significant step towards gender equality and leadership diversity, the Flag carrier of Singapore, SIA announced on June 12, 2023, that it had appointed Ms JoAnn Tan as its first-ever female Chief Financial Officer (CFO).  Ms Tan will be taking over as CFO from Tan Kai Ping beginning September 10th.  She will replace Tan Kai Ping, who will become Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Singapore Airlines.

The appointment marks a milestone for the airline industry while also reflecting the commitment of the company to fostering inclusivity while recognizing talent regardless of gender.

In this article, we delve into the details of this groundbreaking appointment which highlights the achievements, potential impact and qualifications of the newly appointed CFO.

Ms Tan is a member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants, while she is a graduate of the National University of Singapore, and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Tan has been with Singapore Airlines for more than 20 years and has held several senior positions including those of Vice President of Treasury and Risk Management and Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis, while she is presently SIA’s Senior Vice president of marketing planning.

Ms. Tan’s expertise in Financial Management and impressive track record make her the ideal candidate for this critical role.

Ms Tan played a key role in creating new connections with Scoot, its budget airline while she also oversaw other businesses such as Pelago, KrisFlyer, and Kris+ that are part of the Singapore Airlines Group.

Her appointment showcases the commitment of the Airline to promoting equal opportunities and diversity within its leadership team.  Ms Tan has navigated successfully through various financial challenges ensuring profitability and sustainable growth for the organisations she has served.

Ms. Tan’s ability to analyze market trends, drive operational efficiency and develop effective financial strategies has garnered her recognition as a respected leader in the field.   SIA’s Chairman said in a statement that Tan is a “seasoned and experienced” financial leader with a “strong track record of success”. He went on to say that she was well placed to lead the finance function of Singapore Airlines and to support the long-term sustainability and growth of the company.

Breaking Barriers in the Aviation Industry

In an industry traditionally dominated by male leadership, the appointment of the first female CFO in SIA is a groundbreaking achievement. This move challenges existing gender biases prevalent across the aviation sector while paving the way for increased gender diversity in senior positions.  SIA sets an inspiring example to be followed by other organisations and airlines, highlighting the significance of equal representation and equal opportunities for women in leadership roles.

Empowering Women in the Workplace

Singapore Airlines reinforces its commitment to empowering women within its company and the wider industry by appointing a female CFO.  This move sends out a powerful message that capability and talent rather than gender, are the primary factors determining leadership appointments. This appointment not only empowers and inspires women in the workplace but also sets a benchmark for other companies to aspire to in their pursuit of leadership diversity and gender equality.

Such initiatives play a crucial role in encouraging females to pursue leadership positions, fostering a more inclusive work environment, and shattering the glass ceiling that has been limiting their professional growth for far too long.

This decision showcases SIA’s dedication to recognizing talent based on merit, fostering inclusivity and embracing diversity.

Ms. JoAnn Tan’s extensive experience, strategic vision and exemplary qualifications position her as an exceptional leader who will contribute to the continued growth and financial success of Singapore Airlines.

News of the new SIA’s appointment comes just weeks after Qantas, the Australian national flag carrier announced that Group CEO Alan Joyce will be replaced this year by the Group’s first female CEO and Chief Executive, Vanessa Hudson.
