Singapore (CU)_ Due to Malaysia’s recent prohibition on chicken exports, Singapore is exploring for other fresh chicken markets to meet their demands. Even though Malaysia lifted the ban on exporting kampong and black chicken, it cannot export commercial broiler chicken, which accounts for the vast majority of chicken it regularly supplies to Singapore. A Singapore Food Agency team is now assessing farms, slaughterhouses, and processing facilities across the archipelago.

As the export ban enters its third week, the senior officials announced last week that they are evaluating Indonesia’s suitability as a chicken import source with their Indonesian counterparts. According to close sources, the Singapore Food Authority is working closely with Indonesian authorities to study Indonesia’s feasibility as a potential source of chicken for Singapore.

As part of the certification process, SFA conducts document analysis and on-site investigations to ensure that overseas enterprises and farms are capable of fulfilling Singapore’s import requirements and food safety guidelines before exporting to the country. If Singapore finalizes the business, then Indonesia will supply chicken to Singapore for the first time. Before this, they only delivered around 50,000 salted eggs every month.

The Director-General for Animal Husbandry and Health at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Nasrullah, informed the media that SFA experts had been examining Indonesian farms. He indicated that supplies would be permitted provided their cost and quality satisfied Singapore’s standards. The final results of the survey will determine other aspects, such as the quantity given and whether the chicken supplied will be frozen or alive. However, logistical costs are a concern for live chicken shipments to Singapore. In addition, chickens may die or lose weight during travel.

Before the pandemic, the Indonesian Ministry of Trade reported an excess stock of chicken in the nation. The pandemic caused chicken production to exceed demand by 48 percent in 2020 and 36 percent in 2021. In the same year, 34% of Singapore’s chicken supply was imported from Malaysia. Singapore also imports chicken from Brazil and the United States in addition to Malaysia.
