Sri Lankan-born Jayasooriya bags award for Australia’s Best Accountant of the Year

Australia (Commonwealth Union)_Sri Lankan-born accountant Vajira Jayasooriya won the coveted title of Best Accountant of the Year 2022 in Australia. The award recognizes and honors accountants across the country annually, and this year, Jayasooriya secured the award for the best State Accountant, as well as Australia’s Best Accountant of the year. Upon receiving the award, Vajira Jayasooriya stated that this is the first time a Sri Lankan has received this honor. 

The 45-year-old Sri Lankan accountant also won the award for the Best Accountant in the state of Queensland. According to Jayasooriya, there are around 6,000 accountants who are enrolled with the Accountants Institute in Queensland. He was chosen as the Accountant of the Year for Australia out of the six finest accountants from six different states. The award ceremony was conducted by the Institute of Public Accountants of Australia (IPA), which is one among the three organizations in Australia that register accountants and has a membership of more than 50,000 accountants.

Jayasooriya, who was born in Kiribathgoda in 1977, attended many Sri Lankan schools, including Dharmaraja College in Kandy, where he completed his GCE Advanced Level Examinations. He also studied at the University of Colombo and majored in economics before migrating to Australia, where he was certified in accounting. The renowned Sri Lankan accountant is an active member of several Professional Associations. He is a member of the Institute of Public Accountants in Australia, a member of the Institute of Financial Accountants in the UK, a registered agent at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and a registered tax agent at the Australian Taxation Office. 

Jayasooriya’s educational qualifications include a Master’s degree in Accounting and Business Management at Griffith University; Doctor of Business Administration at the University of Southern Queensland, Business Management at the University of New England, a Post Graduate Diploma of Management at CQUniversity, a degree in Economics at University of Colombo and Doctor of Business Administration at Southern Cross University.
