Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Tourism in Sri Lanka has experienced a noteworthy resurgence, culminating in a revenue milestone of $1.8 billion in the year 2023. Over the span of eleven months, the sector has witnessed substantial growth, with the overall number of tourist arrivals reaching 1.27 million. According to the latest report from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), this surge has resulted in an impressive 78.3% increase in income generated by tourism from January to November 2023 compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

The latest data reveals a particularly striking surge in revenue in November 2023, amounting to $205.3 million, which more than doubles the revenue recorded in November 2022. Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry, addressing the parliament with optimism, expressed hopes for a continued upswing in tourist arrivals in the year 2024, attributing this growth to the increased presence of airlines in the country. Further, November 2023 marked a pinnacle in international tourism for Sri Lanka, with 151,496 international tourists gracing its shores, which is the highest monthly number for the year.

Simultaneously, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority underscored the overall significance of tourism, which stands as one of the nation’s primary foreign revenue generators, with cumulative arrivals reaching 1.27 million until November 2023. In a strategic move to further stimulate tourism, the government waived visa fees for nationals from key countries, including India, China, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan, in late October. This calculated initiative aims to elevate Sri Lanka’s allure as a preferred tourist destination, thereby fostering growth within the tourism sector. The Foreign Affairs Minister, in a statement, outlined that this visa-free travel for designated countries will be implemented as a pilot project until March 31, 2024.

Under this arrangement, tourists from the specified countries can visit Sri Lanka without incurring visa fees. Notably, India continues to be Sri Lanka’s predominant inbound tourism market, with over 30,000 Indian tourists visiting in September 2023 alone. The tourism sector in Sri Lanka faced a downturn following the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, which resulted in the loss of 270 lives, including 11 Indians, and left over 500 injured. Additionally, the recent economic crisis in Sri Lanka, exacerbated by acute shortages of essential items such as food, medicine, cooking gas, fuel, toilet paper, and even matches, has posed additional challenges to the tourism industry.
