Indian women who are at the vanguard of climate action at COP28

India (Commonwealth Union)_ The Climate Change 2023 Synthesis Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emphasizes the alarming impact of human-induced climate transformation, which triggers severe weather events globally. This phenomenon has led to widespread adverse consequences for both ecosystems and human populations. Accordingly, reports of this nature serve as catalysts for intensified global collaboration, exemplified by events like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP28). Against the backdrop of COP28, which commenced in Dubai on November 30, it is opportune to spotlight the endeavors of Indian women actively spearheading climate-friendly initiatives.

Nidhi Pant 

Nidhi Pant, the founder of S4S (Science For Society) Technologies, emerges as a key figure championing climate action. She leads the Women Climate Collective (WCC), a community focusing on climate change and gender issues, operating at the intersection of agriculture, gender, energy access, and financial inclusion. Pant’s S4S Technologies, a solar-powered near-farm gate food processing platform, empowers numerous women entrepreneurs and small businesses. Recognized for her commitment to environmental sustainability, she received the esteemed Earthshot Prize 2023, an accolade often referred to as the ‘Eco Oscars’. Pant is also a recipient of various awards, including the Women Transforming India Awards, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia and India listings, the Unilever Young Entrepreneur Award, and the Cisco Youth Leadership Award.

Dia Mirza 

Renowned actress, producer, and climate advocate Dia Mirza serves as the National Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She represented India’s sustainability concerns at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) – SDG Summit in New York. Mirza collaborates with the Sanctuary Nature Foundation and has produced the film ‘Kids for Tigers,’ addressing biodiversity depletion and endangered species like snow leopards. Additionally, she supports the Wildlife Trust of India in its endeavors to highlight the courage and sacrifices of forest rangers. Dia Mirza actively promotes plastic-neutral choices and invests in green businesses.

Varsha Raikwar 

Varsha Raikwar, a 25-year-old radio jockey from Madhya Pradesh, stands out as a climate champion with the Women Climate Collective (WCC). Recognized as a Nat Geo ‘One for Change’ campaign changemaker, Raikwar utilizes her platform to educate her community in Bundelkhand, North India, about resource management, waste, and eco-friendliness. Despite facing gender-based discrimination, she is committed to ensuring equal representation of women in climate change discussions. In 2021, Varsha Raikwar was honored as a United Nations Young Climate Leader for her vital contributions to environmental education and gender equality.

Gul Panag 

Gul Panag, known for her roles as an actor, producer, and entrepreneur, is a fervent advocate for a sustainable future. Through her startup, Sunfuel Electric, Panag provides electric vehicle charging solutions across India. Beyond entrepreneurship, she is deeply involved in environmental causes, exemplified by her role in The Col. Shamsher Singh Foundation, an NGO focusing on gender equality, education, and disaster management. Gul Panag extends her philanthropic efforts to community well-being, showcasing dedication to both environmental causes and the less fortunate.

Pragya Kapoor 

Entrepreneur and environmental advocate Pragya Kapoor has launched initiatives contributing to a cleaner planet. Through her NGO, Ek Saath Foundation (ESF), she has made a significant impact on climate action, engaging in social causes such as cleaning and promoting hygiene awareness in underserved areas. ESF has launched initiatives like ‘Project Kuda’ to implement a responsible waste management system, promoting a circular economy. On World Environment Day this year, Pragya worked with the Indian Navy for a cleanliness campaign at Carter Road, Mumbai.
